In samenwerking met designer Stephen Wong van het NY design collective WONG WONG introduceert het hippe sokkenlabel een exclusieve sportlijn geïnspireerd op de aankomende Wereld Kampioenschappen voetbal te Zuid‐Afrika.
Happy Socks by WONG WONG brengt met de nieuwe lijn een eerbetoon aan acht landen die tijdens het komende WK voetbal prominent aanwezig zullen zijn; Argentinië, Brazilië, Engeland, Frankrijk, Duitsland, Nederland, Italië en Zuid‐Afrika. Zes van deze landen mochten al eerder de titel ‘Wereldkampioen’ dragen, met geborduurde sterren op de sokken wordt het aantal wereldtitels per land op de sokken aangeven.
De samenwerking met diverse kunstenaars en andere modemerken is onderdeel van het succesvolle Happy Socks concept.

Stephen Wong heeft zijn sporen in de modewereld verdient als creatief directeur van Helmut Lang Studio’s, sinds 2007 werkt hij onder de naam WONG WONG aan bijzondere designprojecten.

Soundsystem Culture is a new initiative to promote soundsystem culture in the Netherlands. Various rising sounds joined forces and together they play throughout the country. The first edition was held in august in The Hague, the second edition will take place on the 19th of december at The Gluefactory in Leiden. Dates in Arnhem, Haarlem and Rotterdam are yet to be confirmed.
On the line up for the second edition:

Ketown Sound from Leiden
Jahva Sound from The Hague
Rootsolid Sound from Rotterdam
and Wazari Sound from Haarlem

Expect big tunes and big riddims. For if you love reggae/dancehall and soundsystem culture you can't miss this one! Bring your airhorns!

The latest project from Nike Sportswear gives us a very insightful look into the history of Nike’s legendary Cortez sneakers. Three videos were made in total with two now available for viewing. The first follows the history of the sneakers development with Nike employee Geoff Hollister and Nike Director of Corporate Education Nelson Farris. The second video, entitled The Cortez: Adoption, looks back at the adoption of the sneaker into a variety of different cultures from the West Coast to the East. Participants include: Mister Cartoon, Estevan Oriol, Patrick Martinez (Artist/Graphic Designer), DJ EMZ, Ken Swift (Breakdancer), and Eric Haze. Both are a great watch, so check them out here.

Thinking of Jamaica usually conjures up an image of peace-loving Rastafarians with thick dreadlocks surrounded by even thicker clouds of hash smoke who play reggae tunes and sing the praises of Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie. Luciano Blotta's self-conscious documentary Rise Up provides ample support of that cliché, but he simultaneously shows that behind the clever export product that reggae has become, a world of poverty and underdevelopment is lurking. In the minds of many young Jamaicans, the only way out is a career in music, but the competition is overwhelming, so everyone tries to display their talent wherever and whenever they can. Blotta follows three young people who are trying to rise up from the underground: there's the shy Kemoy, who sings beautiful R&B-like songs; the white Ice, whose biggest dream is to perform at the famous Reggae Sumfest; and the charismatic Turbulence, who almost ended up living a life of crime before he thought better of it. These days, Turbulence's goal is to "Eat good food, have good life, make music." Blotta interweaves the three storylines with lots of music (watch out for the guy with the one-stringed guitar), atmospheric shots of the city and country, and the commentary, which is spoken in juicy Jamaican English by a trio of experts from the music world. Sly and Robbie stop by, as well as the legendary Lee Perry, to say that Kemoy has a lot of talent. But apparently talent alone isn't enough not by a long shot

Combining the old world traditions of Japan under a new medium, the Nike ACG Kimono jacket came to fruition under a trip to Japan by Global Design Director Stewart Horner. Seeing the intricate and painstaking process of creating Kimono fabrics, Stewart Horner set out to re-create this same traditional process under the pretense of a highly technical 3-Layer Storm-Fit performance jacket. Although the outer layers of the jacket are simplistic in nature, the inner workings of the jacket include some strong aspects of design for integration with hardware.

On 1 January 2008, Onitsuka Tiger will launch its E l e c t r i c Ti g e r L a n d campaign. The focal point of this will be a dramatic, metre-long neon shoe – an Electric Light sculpture that pays homage to the awesome energy of Japan by incorporating distinctive elements such as Tokyo’s spectacular skyline, vibrant neon signage, transport, night markets, and vending machines.
In the summer, Onitsuka Tiger will then unveil its E l e c t r i c Ti g e r L a n d streetwear collection to the public. Featuring special T-shirts and the seriouslycool S u no t o r e 72 shoes, the design drawings used to create the incredible ElectricLight sculpture also appear as prints on the apparel. The collection will be supportedby exciting POS materials to create a fantastic Tokyo scene in the shop window.

The first S u no t o r e (which means “snow training”) shoe made its debut at the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympic Games as the official footwear of the Japanese national team. S u no t o r e 72 draws inspiration from this classic design: all the original features have been retained, including the tongue’s distinctive bag construction which prevents snow from getting inside. And the practical rubber outsole provides extra grip in deeper snow.
